My 84-year-old husband takes a 75mg aspirin tablet daily. He used to take ginkgo biloba tablets but recently stopped because he heard that the two medications should not be taken together. I think he is wrong about this. Can you tell us who is right?
You are not going to like me for saying this but your husband is correct. Aspirin helps to stop platelets in the blood sticking together, which means it can help prevent blood clots. It is used to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
However, as with all blood-thinning drugs, with higher dosages there is an increased risk of bleeding occurring not only from small cuts but also from stomach ulcers and from small blood vessels in the brain.
The herbal remedy ginkgo biloba also has a blood-thinning action and if taken with aspirin there is a significantly increased risk of bleeding. The combination can be dangerous and should be avoided. Ginkgo biloba should also be avoided by people taking other drugs that are used for treating or preventing blood clots, such as warfarin or clopidogrel.
well iv learnd somthing from that Sandie,i will test m daughter with it,she is a carer at a home for the elderly and they have up dates on almost every thing but i bet she wont know about that
I already take Genko Biloba, Jackie, and, until I read this, I was thinking about taking an Asprin every day also. _________________ http://sewardchronicles.ning.com/
Apparently it is safe to take one Asprin every day, Dora, providing that as has been already stated, you are not taking any other blood thinners, including herbal ones.
However, having said this, of course, if you have any doubts, then by all means consult your GP.
