I know that Banks usually get a bad press, but, credit where it's due to Barclays.
I recieved a letter from them earlier this week, offering me a "Personal Reserve" on my Current Account.
The idea behind this, is that you will not have any Direct Debit payments returned unpaid if you run out of funds.
The D.D. will be met from this "Special Reserve" and you will not incurr charges for going overdrawn without permission.
There will, however, be a charge of £22 for a five day period if you use this Reserve.
Not a free service, and one you can choose to "opt out" of, if you wish.
However, it is certainly better than inadvertantly incurring a Returned Direct Debit fee of £35, plus the charge from the company to whom the Direct Debit had failed, (usually around Eight Pounds).
So, as I say, it's not often one can write an article praising any bank, but I think Barclays deserve a mention for this new service.
