Fifteen staff at Cheltenham College are to be made redundant. A spokesman at the private school said the action was needed to help save money and keep fee increases to a minimum for parents. The school, which has annual fees of £27,000 a year, has about 1,000 pupils. The headteacher, John Richardson, said he was hopeful that he would not have to make further job cuts. The jobs losses are likely to include 10 full and part-time teachers, as well as five support staff.
Independent newsagents are closing at a rate of more than one a day, according to figures from the National Federation of Retail Newsagents. The body, which represents small independent shops, said 510 of their members went bankrupt last year and said small newsagents were struggling to compete with supermarkets.
