The Times revealed yesterday that a factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, which is Britains only significant manufacturer of wind turbines, will produce its last batch of seven-tonne blades this week. More than 600 people employed at the plant and a related facility in Southampton, will be made redundant at the end of the month. All 7,000 turbines that the Government committed itself yesterday to installing over the next decade will be manufactured overseas. _________________ http://sewardchronicles.ning.com/
You couldn't make it up, could you? We were deperate for manufacturing industry before but now that the financial sector we'd turned to as the country's main industry has gone belly-up wouldn't you think they'd be desperately trying to hang onto anything that promised jobs.
Possibly it may work out cheaper to make them abroad but when you factor in the extra unemployment benefits to be paid here and the staff's reduced spending power it certainly isn't cheaper. The government have bailed out so many undeserving cases since this recession started they, as usual, have their priorities all wrong.
Nissan up here at Washington, on the other hand, have just won the contract to make batteries for electric cars. The money came from the much maligned EU, I still don't want to stay in it, and the government are helping in a minor way. It will employ 200 people initially I'm not jumping for joy yet because I think everyone is still very undecided how and in what form these cars are going to be run. I think it's Toyota who is planning cars that will run on dual fuel. Not at the same time I don't think but it would certainly cover for the fact that these batteries aren't going to run for long without needing to be recharged. _________________ Marie
