A Day OutI'm not sure I can put a picture in but I will try. I am just a very amateur photographer though. This is an open-air museum near us covering about 300 acres. An 1825 Manor House with completely authentic contents and a 1913 town and colliery village.

This was the printer in the town
The drawing room in the Manor House.
the formal garden to the front of the Manor House.

Great pics Marieann, they bring back memories of the North East for me, I havn't been to Beamish for a few years now but it looks exactly how I remember it. It's great to have someone from my part of the country on here at last, I have lived in the South for too long now and try to get back up North as often as I can, but sadly, not often enough !
Hope you had a lovely day out

Thank you we did but we do go often. This time we concentrated on the Manor House and the Printers, Bank and Masonic Hall in the Town. The Masonic Hall is new, I think they brought it from Sunderland and it is wonderful. I have never seen inside one before and I couldn't believe how opulent it was.
Have you been to the Wetlands and Waterfowl Trust at Washington, Ken R? It is worth a visit. Our part of the country has so much to offer now. I got some lovely photos of the Tall Ships at Newcastle last year.
I'm going to stop now you will be bored stiff.

I havn't managed the Wetlands & Waterfowl Trust yet, I really ought to try and get back more often ! I've always wanted to see the tall ships as well but havn't managed that either
Don't worry about boring me Marieann, I could listen to stories from the Northeast for ever ! I know Admin has a soft spot for the Northeast as well

What an excellent and interesting thread, Marieann. Gave me a smashing opportunity to see some of the world not, nor likely, to visit.

Thank you Frank. These are for the train lovers. It is part of the waggonway (1825) moving the coal from the mine. We had a ride on the train last week. Boneshaking doesn't cover it.

Lovely pics, Marieann, thank you for sharing them with us. Don't worry, you are not boring when you talk about 'up North'. As Ken says, I have a very soft spot for the North, generally, I love the Border Country, Berwick-on-Tweed, further down the coast I've spent time at Staithes, Whitby and Newcastle. On the opposite coast I like Southport very much, the people are so much friendlier in the North. Everyone here just is in so much of a hurry all the time. Here, they seem totally obsessed with work and money, all buying and living in houses that they really can't afford. They drive cars that aren't paid for, and generally they all seem to live well beyond their means. Here it's 'all show' and no substance!
We have just had reports that a man has been found dead under a flyover not half a mile from where I live. It's not murder either! Apparently he walked into Tescos, bought a kitchen knife, and killed himself with it. He was 33 years old!

Just to balance things up..... the trolley bus runs from the town to the colliery and the trams run from the main entrance to the manor house, town. farm and back to the main entrance every 20 minutes.
There is also a fairground and a railway station with a fabulous signal box and a farm.

That is dreadful admin what turmoil your mind must be in to do that. These days there are supposed to be safeguards and help for any one in that state. It doesn't work in practise though does it?

I am keeping a close eye on all your photos Marieann. Fascinating. I remember being present and seing n Huskisson killed on the lines at Edge Hill (Liverpool) during the inaug. trip of one of those old steam locos from Liverpool Lime street.
Pssst I was of course a babe in arms"
Admin, you mentioned Southport, and the North. I was a young bobby at that seaside??// resort early in my career. Another place described as All fur coat and no-knickers!"

Frank, I spent a whole weekend at Southport about seven years ago, I never even saw the sea, (it was too far out), and even when I visited the end of the pier, (the second longest in the U.K. Southend has the longest), the sea still seemed a long way off!
But, this aside, I did enjoy my weekend, and found the people really friendly, the food wholesome (and cheap), and my Guest House very welcoming and comfortable.

Spring and Autumn tides there are another matter completely. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Marieann,
The advert for Newkie Brown... ah ah. Can't get it any more at 'the offie' used to use it cooking the sausage, the gorgeous taste may be taken for granted of course. All lager, lager, lager there now. Sausages still good but don't drink the stuff on it's own.

Bootful pics and particularly the steam locomotive. How did you know I love railways? I am going 'up north' next week in search of steam in NRM at York with mates.

I am quite jealous brian.b not that the beasts are a hobby, but that the old steam horses bear much nostalgia for me as a baby 'anorak' schoolboy, when, indeed they were.

I saw it on the board brian. I am not a train enthusiast either but we look after a great-nephew one day a week. He is almost three and loves trains. The nearest station to us is about 12 miles away so we go somewhere in the car and get a train into Newcastle Central Station and he won't let us leave for hours. We took him to the NRM at Shildon in Co. Durham. Not on with York where we hope to go this summer but worth seeing and will improve through time.

Have you got one of the inside of the Co-op please marieann?
I love all these old pictures. Thanks also to 'Guest' for showing some.
Editing to say; I've just seen your co-op drapery fashions on the other thread, they're lovely. What I mean here is the grocery side of the co-op. It remind me of running errands there for my grandma. Do you remember the sugar in the little blue bags? I knew grandma's co-op divi number off by heart. It was 2086. Isn't it strange, the things you remember?

My mothers dividend number was 11559. I used to say it on the way to the village store. Yes, I can remember the blue sugar bags and the huge rounds of butter and cheese.
I'll have a look for the grocery section, if not I'll take some next time we go. I think I have some hardware. We were there last Thursday but it was the inside of the new Masonic Hall I wanted, such a beautiful room.

I forgot to log in again that was my post above. I don't have anything from the food department so next time I will get some. I keep trying to take the window display from the sweet shop but all we have got so far is our own reflections in the glass.
Carol did you see the pictures from the royal yacht that I posted at the other place?
