The tally of job losses in Britain over the last couple of days climbed to 3,600 today when it emerged that more than 500 people are being laid off at British Airways and a cigarette filter maker.
The news ended another gloomy week on the employment front.
BA said this morning the "tough economic climate" had forced it to cut 300 jobs as part of a targeted voluntary redundancy scheme.
A spokesman said: "The scheme was designed to meet some demand for redundancy in some parts of the business and where it is possible to release people and not replace them. We are pleased with the take up and 300 people will leave the airline under this scheme at the end of May."
Filtrona Filters said it was shedding 233 jobs after a worldwide slump in the tobacco market.

That's because I have stopped smoking, also so have many others that I talk to.
A lady in Aldi's this afternoon told me she has stopped for ten months.....and since then she hasn't had one day where she could truthfully say that she's felt well.
