Corrie says goodbye to Baldwin.

Sad Coronation Street actor, Johnny Briggs has filmed his final scene as Mike Baldwin, bringing to an end 30 years on the ITV 1 Soap.
Briggs, who has played the Underworld Factory Boss since 1976, recieved gifts from the cast and crew after the scenes at the Manchester studios.

A sad day, and it's sad to see the decline of the charecter who is suffering from Altzheimers.

Just out of interest, (no prizes) can anyone remember one of Johnny Brigg's most famous films? I know the answer, but does anyone else?
Ken R

Would I be right in thinking he popped up in the Dambusters ?
Sandie Seward

Cool I'm not too sure if he was in the 'Dambusters', Ken, the film that I had in mind was called 'The Leather Boys', in which he was a teenage biker who was involved with a gang and who regularly did the 'Ton'.
Ken R

I bow to your greater wisdom of these things Admin Smile
I just had a feeling I'd seen him in an old war film as a member of the RAF and The Dambusters sprang to mind .
Sandie Seward

Smile Your're probably right, Ken, also, have you noticed the DVD that is free with todays 'Telegraph?'
A classic British film of 'Brighton Rock' starring Richard Attenbourough.
A great movie, so I was up early today and off to my local Newsagents where I picked up a copy complete with the free DVD. I intend to watch it again this evening, and will post a review of the film here later.
Ken R

You can't beat the oldies Admin, you are right, Brighton Rock is a real calssic, I never saw any advertising for it or i would have had a word with my friendly newsagent, who normally slips me the odd DVd at the end of the day if any are left over. I will try him out this morning when I get my Sunday papers.
I notice from the tv tonite that the Mail on Sunday has the dvd of the film Ashanti in it tomorrow, this is one of those films that seems to be just a vhicle for actors and has a very slim and highly improbable plot ! I normally would go with anything with Michael Cain in it, but this one is a bit suspect, i think he only did it on condition his wife got a part as well ! They then tried to fob off a ludicrous script onto the public, by putting Peter Ustinov and Omar Sharif in it as well !
Sandie Seward

Cool The only two Micheal Caine films I like are 'Educating Rita', and 'Get Carter'.

Well I watched 'Brighton Rock' earlier this evening, and it really was good. For some reason I thought it was set in the early Fifties, but it transpires that is was set in the late Thirties, just before World War Two.
Talk about style, it oozes it. But I can't help feeling that in the outdoor scenes the cars and vans were more like late fourties rather than pre-war.
Morris Eight series 'E''s saloons and vans, and I'm sure I caught a glimpse of the rear end of a Post War Austin Sixteen!
They also had one of those old arcade recording booths where you could go in and record your own voice, and it pressed it onto a 7" record! I remember I did this back in the late fifties on Weymouth Seafront.
(All this figures, because I've just looked at the sleeve of the DVD and it's a 1947 film). So my car-watching skills haven't let me down, I was sure that some of those vehicles were too modern for the Thirties! Very Happy
Ken R

What about the Ipcress File and Funeral in Berlin ? In fact, any of the Harry Palmer films. There was a fairly newish film as well in which he starred with Pierce Brosnan, who played a Russain agent in East Anglia, trying to sttart the 3rd world war by setting off an atomic device near an American airbase, I can't for the life of me remember the title at the moment, its a bit late for the old grey cells to working !

when johnny briggs did his national service, he was driver of my partners father who was an nco at the time.

for the first time in ages tonight, i watched the last half of corrie. baldwins final scenes were very well played by mr. briggs.

during the 'watching' of the prog, i heard rita ask ken about computers and he admitted he is not a silver surfer. i wonder if he knows about this board? lol! Laughing
Sandie Seward

Laughing Made me laugh too, Brian. I always try to watch Corrie, and have done for a long time now, it really is the best Soap, the acting and directing are first class, and the storylines are consistantly good.
Shame about Mike. Typical, wasn't it? Independant and stubborn right to the end. A Real Character! Or in other words, a 'Diamond Geezer!'.

I visited 'the street' years ago and have phot's from it with some on trainmans tracks board and more to go on. when i went, i met the late percy sugden. i have also met and spoke with bill roache and bill tarmy - ken and jack. bill roache is a spiritualist, the same as me.

An Audience with Coronation Street

What a super programme this was and the very well deserved standing ovation for Johnny Briggs. I enjoyed some of the singing by members of the cast and don't know whether or not it was our telly, but when the lovely Wendi Peters was singing, her voice sounded distorted or she was singing nervously.
Sandie Seward

I didn't watch that programme, Brian, I prefer to see my soap actors and actresses as the charecters they play in the soaps, I don't really want to see them prancing around on stage. If I did, I don't think I'd ever be able to feel the same about them. (As you may have guessed by now, I take my 'Soaps' rather seriously.) Embarassed

I think you would have enjoyed last night as it was done with good taste. I forgot to mention, I also met and spoke with Chris -Brian Tilsley - Quentin a few years ago and checked his ticket on a train. By all accounts at the time, he was a regular traveller there, so will let you know when I go again in near future.
Ken R

I do think that some people get so involved in their soap that they have difficulty differentiating life from TV. There was a letter in one of the TV mags this week from a lady who was disgusted that they had run a tribute show for Mike Bladwin, right after the episode with his funeral in it. She though it was in really poor taste of the TV company and very insensitive, to show the tribute so close to the poor mans funeral Confused

I love some of the soaps as well, but really !!!

Anyway, corrie hasn't been the same since Dennis Tanner was in it Embarassed

Laughing Aha! Good ol' Dennis, the Streets' original 'Bad Boy'. I remember him, and his 'Mum', Elsie. (Patricia Phoenix). A great actress.
Then there was Albert Tatlock, Ena Sharples, Martha Longhurst, and dear little Minnie Caldwell.

No, because I remember them as well. Laughing
Sandie Seward

Laughing In that case, Brian, we must both be showing our age! Laughing
Mind you, this Forum is for the Over Fifties!

Ahhhhhhh.....those were the days Smile I always wanted to try out a Milk Stout after watching Ena and Co in the Rovers snug !

How about Harry & Concepta Hewitt as well ? There you see, us oldies could teach the modern viewers a thing or two about soaps !
