Herbert Smith cuts 84 jobs.Herbert Smith, the law firm, said today it would cut up to 84 jobs as even the City’s oldest and most prestigious legal advisers continue to struggle because of the economic downturn.
Arguably the City’s leading litigation firm, Herbert Smith appeared to be better placed than many of its rivals — some of whom have already announced more than one round of redundancies — to weather the downturn. But a much-predicted increase in commercial disputes has not been sufficient to compensate for the decline of corporate transactional work.
Staff were informed this morning that as many as 84 could lose their jobs, including around 30 fee-earners. Herbert Smith said it hoped that most of the cuts could be achieved by voluntary redundancy although it will also consider proposals for alternative working arrangements.
