Jap rubbish found on Scottish beach.Rubbish from as far away as Japan and Brazil is washing up on a remote Scottish beach.
The St Kilda archipelago in the Outer Hebrides is a World Heritage site and home to a million seabirds. But its windswept isolation in the north Atlantic is no protection from global garbage.
Collecting trash from St Kilda's only beach, staff from the National Trust of Scotland found discarded plastic containers that once held Brazilian mustard, Japanese detergent, Dutch yoghurt and French shower gel.
"Despite being so remote, St Kilda is not immune to the problems of plastic marine debris pollution," said marine ranger Sarah Money.

It's amazing, you look at the size of an ocean and the ferocity of a storm and can't imagine anything as fragile as packaging could possibly survive.
I don't know what the solution is because some people automatically do exactly what they are asked not to. I don't think littering will ever be stamped out completely.

Deep ocean currents are a law unto themselves The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in the USA has spent the last 4 years tracking a consignment of plastic ducks around the world !
4 years ago, a sea container containing over 100,000 plastic toy ducks, destined for the European market, was washed over board from a container ship in the Pacific ocean during a storm. The container burst open and sank, releasing the plastic ducks. People all up and down the Western seaboard of the USA began reporting finding the ducks on beaches and the scientists soon discovered their origins. Thereafter, they have tracked the ducks all over the globe, some have circumnavigated the globe more than once
This has given them an amazing insight into ocean currents around the world, and all for free
