Hi boys and girls, found your forum from a hobby site of mine quite by accident, I have been looking round and like what i have seen. Will sit in the wings for a while and when i feel the need will post something. Keep up the good work at least we can let off steam on here and be on the same wavelength.
Thanks Phill.

Hi Gang

Sorry I haven't been on the Forum of late. This was due to some minor problems with my computer and my very good friend the PC Doctor, has now sorted them out. Then there was a technical hitch and I couldn't get logged back onto the Silver Surfers Forum and this time Admin came to my rescue. Thanks Admin, I am up and running again. I bet you all thought I had left the Forum, No Way!

Speak to you all very soon.

Good to have you back Sylvia, I knew you wouldn't have just abandoned us without so much as a cheerio Laughing

to be honest, i thought you might be on your hols and getting all the sun watching those commonwealth games and decided to stay that bit longer? Laughing
Sylvia

It's good to be back again. I missed all of you and I couldn't even get access to any of your stories either.

My computer plays a very important part in my life and when I discovered it was acting rather strangely, I asked Louise (PC Doctor) to take a look at it for me. Louise is very good with building computers and what makes them function. I know she would help you out too, if you should need it, just let Admin know.

I left my sickly computer with Louise for a few days and boy, I missed it as much as Ken and Admin miss their cigs. My computer is just like an addiction to me, but I do not profess to knowing it all where computers are concerned. I go to computer classes at the Adult Education Centre once a week to try to learn about the applications. i.e. Word Processing, Data Bases, Spreadsheets, Powerpoint etc.

Anyway Brian, I'll travel far on my paltry weekly benefits, but I can dream on. Cool However, I would like to convey my thanks to Admin, Ken and Brian for the warm welcome back, it's appreciated! Very Happy

hi sylvia and glad you have the same sense of humour as me. i know only too well about benefits as i have been on them for four years and it is a pittance to try living on, let alone go anywhere. if i didn't have free passes for the railway, i could never afford rail travel at todays prices. it is like petrol to me and where i am, we need a car because to see my dad 23 miles away, public transport is one massive no. we wold have to meet at the other point of a triangle, if you get my meaning, which i am sure you will.
anyway, great to see you back on here and like you, i am addicted to my computer. speak soon i hope.
Ken R

I know exactly what you mean Sylvia, I probably know the least about computers of anybody currently on this forum. Last August, mine caught a cold and went off to a very knowledgeable friend for a quick overhaul, I was lost for the days it was away ! It turned out to have a major fault and I ended up losing it for nearly 3 weeks !!!! I was tearing my hair out by the it got back to me Crying or Very sad

Anyway, glad to have you back onboard again.

take care

Ken
Sylvia

Thanks for that Ken.

Anyway, I'm always eager to learn new things where computers are concerned and I noticed this advert in the Sunday paper yesterday. It says:
Computers made easy for Senior Citizens. Master your Computer in two hours, on a 3 month trial. I may return it at any time within 3 months for a full refund

Now, to my way of thinking, this may well be the book that I need to help me improve my computer skills. I may visit their website first to see what else they say about their products. I am glad to share this information with other members' of this forum, if they wish to take advantage of this product. Hope it helps, hope it helps me too!

Thanks for the heads up on that one Sylvia, I will check it out myself, it definetly sounds like the sort of thing I could do with.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Hello again.

Did you know that our Admin (Sandie) has many talents, one of which was a Disc Jockey on a local radio station? That was a few years back now, but I actually recorded one of the many radio programme's that Sandie hosted and she was extremely good at it - a natural. The studio was located in Basildon, Essex, known to it's local listeners as EASTGATE FM. Eastgate is the name of Basildon's Shopping Mall.

Sandie had an early morning slot from 3 to 6.30am and she didn't have a 'Play List' like the others' so she was free to play whatever she wanted. I liked her choice of music and would set my timer record button, so's not to miss Sandie's early morning show. I guess you could say, that our Admin knows a thing or two about music.
Sandie Seward

Embarassed Just one little point, Sylvia, I was actually a 'Presenter' as opposed to a DJ.
My show, as you know, was a mixture of words and music, and I wasn't just merely 'spinning records'. Although I never had to use a 'Playlist', I did however take quite a while before I went on air to carefully theme the music for the programme, and to try to play suitable material for the time of night. Plus, the music had to be 'timed' to fit in with the News and Weather Reports, and towards the end of the programme any local traffic or travel news.
There is a lot more goes on behind the scenes in a radio studio than a lot of people realise. Cool But, thank you for your kind words, and I'm so pleased you remember my shows fondly. (So do I, I enjoyed every minute!)
Sylvia

Oops! Sorry about that Admin, Presenter it is. Shocked

is it based anywhere the locarno was? i used to go there to watch dave clark five three times a week. glad all over i did as well. Very Happy
Sylvia

Wow, Brian, now your going back a bit to the days of the Basildon Locarno. Yes, I remember it well. What great times we had there, such a shame those venues close down and become something totally different. There's a large shoe shop immediately below where the Locarno once was and I'm not sure what the premises upstairs are being used for now, but I will endeavour to find out and let you know.

In answer to your question, the Eatgate came many years later and if you can remember Southenhay, where it met Clayhill Road, there used to be some open land there, it is now all built upon and become a Shopping Mall. So, in order to put things into perspective, the Locarno was to the West of the Town Centre and the Eastgate, (aptly named), because it was built to the East of the Town Centre initially, then they added another chunk on later, which now brings it towards the West near the Bus Terminal.

Basildon Town Centre has totally changed since the days of the Locarno, they have taken every bit of available space surrounding the Town and built shops upon it.

I lived in Basildon for a number of years in my hey day, but have since moved to Grays, which is ten miles away.

brian.b

i stay with my aunt in dagenham when visiting the area. the last time i came through grays was on a train shortly before tilbury riverside closed down. i was on the very last passenger service out of t/r as well. oh what memories. go and look at www.basildonhistory and look in there. i also have a postcard of basildon first bus station and if you pm me with your e-mail addy, i will send it to you, along with a few more you may well recognise. i was born in laindon and very near to the station. on the odd occasion, we would visit grays and had friends over there, but they are long since departed.
Sandie Seward

Sylvia, if you mean Marc Jasons' 'Shoeworld', I think theres a snooker hall above it now.
BTW, 'Shoeworld is THE place to go for cheap, good quality shoes. I bought a pair of suade hand-made Itailian Casuals there last year, still wearing them and they have hardly shown any signs of wear. Only £9.99, and worth three times as much.
I don't remember the 'Locarno', as I've only lived in Basildon for 16 years.
Sylvia

Yes Admin, I do mean Marc Jasons Shoe World, but I just couldn't remember what it was called, so thanks for that.

You wouldn't remember the Basildon Locarno, it was going back about 30 plus years ago, well before I had my two kids. Fancy turning that lovely venue into a Snooker Hall, such a shame, but I bet the snooker enthusiasts wouldn't agree with me.

I heard The Dave Clark Five are just coming into fashion in Norfolk Laughing
Sandie Seward

Dave Clark was the drummer in the group if I remember rightly? The only record of theirs I ever bought was their Number One hit, "Glad all Over".
I saw them in concert at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth around 62/63.
What other groups/bands have you seen live?

I have seen:
The Rolling Stones.
The Searchers.
The Hollies.
The Tornados.
Eden Kane.
Little Eva and Big Dee Irwin.
Millie. (My Boy Lollipop)
Freddie and the Dreamers.
Chuck Berry.
Joan Baez.
Elton John.
Fat Larry's Band.
The Undertakers.
The Dowlands.
Julie Grant.
The Springfields.
The Cougars.
Screamin' Lord Such & The Savages.
Maureen Evans.
Not a full comprehensive list, there are a lot more bands and artists I have seen live over the years, but these'll do to get your memories flowing.

I feel a bit left out of all this pop concert stuff, I must have lived a very sheltered life ! My only claim to fame is seeing ABBA live at an amphitheatre in Cyprus when they did a concert for the UN in 1972, I also managed a drink with them afterwards, they were really nice down to earthe people. Ditto a concert with Bachmann Turner Overdrive, also for the UN and I once got invited to a party at Bruce Springsteens house, that about does it for my participation in the pop world Embarassed
Sylvia

Hi Ken, well all I can say to that, is you did at least get to have a drink with ABBA and you did get to go to Bruce Springsteins house which is something I've never done. I bet most people can say that they have never had that same claim to fame, so well done you! You must be a very nice person to get along with. Laughing

ABBA, my favourite group of the 70's. I have a copy in blue vinyl of every british single they released and all 26 of them and in MINT condition. You have one over me to actually see them, never mind drink with them. I also have several video's, albums and cd's of them. GREATEST Group of that era.
Ken R

Yes, I was very fortunate to see and meet ABBA although I didn't realise it at the time. This was very early in the 70s and they hadn't quite made it as big as they are today. It was a tradition that units of the UN had groups and entertainers from their own countries, come out to the middle east to cheer the troops up, so to speak. The Canadians had Bachmann Turner Overdrive, the Swedes had ABBA and us Brits had the Tremeloes (we also got Frankie Howard and Julie Ege) performing a live routine on the back of an artic trailer parked on the parade ground !

Thank you for the vote of confidence Sylvia, it is much appreciated, I only got the invite from a very good friend of mine who happened to live a few doors away from Bruce S. in Pacific Palisades in LA. It was a great do and you wouldn't believe the people who turned up, because it was mainly celebs, they weren't putting on an act for the camers or press so it was incredibly laid back, egos were checked in at the door and everyone was out to have great time and generally enjoy themselves. My friend was/is really well known out there and everybody came up and chatted to him and his wife, I just stood there like a complete dork, opening and closing my mouth like a beached cod and grinning from ear to ear like an imbecile Embarassed

I did get one or two invites on the back of attending this party, but I didn't have the confidence to attend without making a complete fool of myself again and again, so I made sure I was "out of town" when the parties were on Embarassed At least I can say I went to one party and mingled with the stars, that is enough for me thanks !
Sandie Seward
