Well you get as much interest under the bed as you do at the banks and you know were it is

That is most certainly true, Joan, with today's latest Interest Rate Cut to only 0.05%, it is not worth keeping it in the Bank.
The only reason why I keep an alternative Savings Account with my Bank is purely Business.
It gives my Current Account yet another cushion because if my Currant Account goes near to going into Overdraft Mode, I transfer online a few quid to "bolster" it up until the weekend. when I can usually transfer (the usually still unspent amount back into my savings..

We had the same problem a few weeks ago, we had to pay for half of our daughters wedding reception, we withdrew the money from the building sociaty they gave us a cheque, we put it in the bank,on the same day we paid our credit card bill which included the reception bill, now you would think a cheque from one bank to another would clear pretty quickly but oh no.the Credit card money went straight out of the account so until the other cheque cleared we did not have any cash left in our current account, so if a DD had come out we would have been overdrawn and would have to pay charges, I have a savings account in my name so I had to transfere just like you to cover ourselves do you know that cheque took five full days to clear.

It's only a matter of time now Joan until cheques are phased out for good.
They are expensive to process, and as you found out, very slow to clear.
