Nuclear Weapons

I was reading what Boris Johnson had to say in the Telegraph about the UK behaving like a poodle as far as the US was concerned.

In a nutshell he puts it down to our reliance on American nuclear weapons. I also got the impression that he didn't think the new ones Gordon Brown said we were to get are really necessary.

This is the article:

Surely there must be more reasons than that?
Sandie Seward

A good, well thought out and written article. Whilst I have no particular views on our 'friendship' with America, I do think it's very demeaning of us to pander to them so much. The truth is, Marie, we still owe the U.S. so much money, and this is just one of the 'holds' they have over us. (The other main 'hold' of course being McDonalds Laughing ). Iraq and Afghanistan are not our problems really, but America has made them so, which is why our soldiers are being killed in both countries. Wherever America leads, we follow, Bush only has to click his fingers and Super-Poodle Tony comes running and panting and rolling over on his back to have his tummy tickled! Makes me mad! Mad

I heard this on the evening news and I think it's just a matter of time before some lunatic governor should decide to press the button. I think it's quite frightening really! Sad

The Iranian Nuclear Threat – A Status Report

As the world recalls the devastating implications of terror, we ask what lies ahead in this slightly pessimistic report on the West’s options in opposing Iran’s nuclear threat The anniversary of September 11, which we marked recently, is above all a day of remembrance. However, apart from our duty to remember and pay our respects to those who died in the terror attack, the Western world must draw the right conclusions and take the right steps. The world must pledge that such a tragedy will never be repeated.

In 2006, despite the warning and lessons of September 11 2001, Iran’s nuclear program still hangs like a millstone around the neck of the West.

There have been rumbles that the American government knew of the impending attacks but did nothing. Others maintain that even if the government was in the dark, that does not exonerate it. Ignorance is guilt. In face of the growing Iranian threat, ignorance is not an option. The Iranian monster is rising from its swamp at a dizzying rate and the West appears to be standing, mouth open, doing nothing to protect itself.

Indeed, the general feeling in Israel is that as long as the world stays silent before this menace, it is paving the ground for a second Holocaust. This may be correct, but to set the record straight, we must understand the situation before the international community regarding Iran.

No one in the West, or in China and Russia really wants to see Iran with nuclear capability. The West’s attitude to the bomb ranges from “don’t care” to “must never happen”. And, naturally, Israel is the most vocal in its opposition to Iran having the bomb. Shoulder to shoulder with Israel is the United States, and alongside her, though more conservatively, align Britain, Germany, and Australia.

The governments of these four countries have all expressed unqualified support for a military attack on Iran, which at the very least would paralyze Iranian efforts to develop the bomb. However, the path to this goal is blocked by multiple – and interrelated – obstacles.

Whilst I'm aware, that most countries have these nuclear weapons of mass destruction and no doubt we all sit in wait and wonder who will be the first to push the button. It surely does make you wonder why human beings should want to destroy the earth and all living things. What would these power mad lunatics hope to gain from mass destruction? My knowledge of this is very limited, but it appears that every country has to protect itself by being nuclear too! Such lunacy!
