Joan, I do understand how they think.....up to a point.
I have been around computers since the early '80's and online since the early nineties. I have been a Member of many different forums and an Administrator of others. I have at least four websites of my own, including blogs, podcasts, and social networks.
On almost all of these I use my own name, not a "username", and I feel that if I have something that I need to say (and I frequently do), then I would rather put my own name to my work than hide behind a nom-de-plume.
As for having your identity nicked, well, that's a chance I'm prepared to take.
Sensible precautions should of course be taken, but a lot of the stories we read in the media about this happening, is greatly blown up and just becomes "paper talk."
I'm not, of course, saying that it doesn't happen, but if you take sensible precautions then I feel that there isn't too much to worry about online.
Just treat others the way that you would treat someone you met in person, a little warily at first, until you get to "know" them better.
