Wantage feeling the Pinch.Desperate times beget desperate measures. In recent months at least 15 local firms in Wantage have closed or cut staff. They include Stan James, an online sports betting company which has relocated to the tax haven of Gibraltar, shedding 74 jobs; car parts firm Sonas (50 jobs); White Horse Plastics (25); McDermid Autotype (40); together with countless smaller business, plus bars, shops and estate agents.
These redundancies tell only part of this depressing tale. Offering an idyllic, pastoral lifestyle just 60 miles from London, Wantage has long been a magnet for high-flyers who earn fat salaries in the City and retreat to their rural piles at the weekend.
