Hi, Vailron, thanks for your post. Your're right, the weather certainly has improved over the past couple of days, and today, it's really warm.
As you know by now, we do not have many members yet, it's difficult to attract new ones, but the ones we do have, like yourself, are valued and respected.
Please keep your posts coming, it's good to hear different voices and opinions.

so sorry folks, but i had to go out this morning and despite trying to get back quick, everywhere i went, there were delays. i went in our local farmfoods, picked up 4 items and one checkout open with 7 people in front of me with loaded trolleys. they wouldn't open another checkout and nobody offered to let me shoot through fast, so i dumped the basket at another closed one and told the girl she can put them back. i wont be going back there in a hurry.

Hi Vailron, hi everybody.
Vailron, I made the most of the sunshine today and got stuck in with some gardening, then I cleaned out my pond, oh it was so messy and very smelly too (horrible), then the wahing machine finished it's cycle so I pegged out loads of washing. Today's warm sunshine brought out the best in me, I even got around to cleaning my car inside and out and I'm very pleased with the end results.
Tonight I sit down feeling rather cream crackered and sip a glass of white wine. After my busy day, I feel I have earned it!

I'm sure you have, Sylvia. Nothing like keeping busy!

Ken R

Unfortunately, it rained most of the day here, so work was confined to indoors only The old abode is now festooned with washing drying on hangers, clothes horses etc.
Managed a bit of cleaning but my heart wasn't really in it today, dusted a few models off and then decided to trim the old beard as it was a bit like having a maniac staring back at me through a privet hedge whenever I looked in the mirror ! Now when I look in the mirror, a convicted psychopath stares back at me
I too am now "cream crackered" and a bit scared that the bloke in mirror will get me in my sleep tonight
Ken
|
Sylvia
|
Oh Ken, you're so funny, what am I going to do with you?
As for the bloke staring back at you in the mirror, well I've come to know him over recent months and let me tell you that he has a very kind heart and he genuinly cares about other people, especially when they are troubled. He's inoffensive, never rude or smutty, and a perfect gentleman. He's one of the best and liked very much by everyone on this Forum.
You can rest easy now Ken, because that bloke staring back at you in the mirror, will never hurt you!
Oh, by the way Ken, thanks for sending the rain over to Essex today, it's raining cats and dogs outside. So glad I did my gardening yesterday.
Note: How did heavy rainfall get the name cats and dogs, does anybody know? I wish I did!

Hi Maggie
I wouldn't go outside, not if you really don't have to, that is. It's grey, depressing and very wet.
My late mother used to use the term 'raining Cats & Dogs' but I always wondered where this saying originated. Does anyone out there know?

I did go out when the rain had stopped,BUT it poured down when i was walking along the road so i got wet
I did a google search on Raining Cats and Dogs, one answer i got was:
Meaning:
When it is raining cats and dogs, it is raining very heavily.

Hi Admin, would it be possible to get a list of members birthdays on this Forum - No, not their ages, just their birthdays, then we could send them a birthday wish without the need for them to remind us?
No one would've known it was Vailron's birthday, had she not let us know first and let's face it, we all love to be wished a happy birthday. I realise that some people may decline to give their birthdays, then we could be forgiven for not saying those two little words 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY'
It's just a suggestion Admin, what do you think?

I'll try not to grow up too fast, I enjoy being a big kid, I have more fun than I ever did as a small kid
It's easy to get carried away on here, some nights I'm reading posts and replying and look at my watch and discover its gone 2 in the morning !
I'm always frightened I'm gonna miss something of earth shattering importance

You know what Ken, I wrote these birthdays with their respective names down on a pad and then transferred them onto a Word Document. I noticed too, that the birthday's seem to be the 10th or the 20th as well. It really is spooky, I agree!
I too, like to go onto the Forum as often as possible, as the chances are, there will be something of the utmost importance and I don't want to miss it either. As for growing old Ken, don't worry about it, age is but a number. It's how you feel inside that counts and someday's I'm just a little kid inside an adults body, who cares!

all off enjoying the bank holiday i take it???
|
Sandie Seward
|
Hi Vailron, well, here's one that isn't. I don't believe in travelling anywhere on Bank Holidays, my car stays where it is. I was up till past three last night, or should this be 'this morning', so I enjoyed a long lie-in today and have only been up and about for an hour or so. The weather here is cool, windy and showery, which makes me me glad that I haven't gone anywhere.
I have enough to do, running two Forums and two websites, as well as my growing Ebay buisness, all this keeps me from ever getting 'bored'.
What are you up to today?
|
caroljoyce
|
My bank holiday hasn't been very exciting. We went to Rutland water to see the Ospray that's nesting there. We didn't see it though.... we didn't see much at all.
We couldn't find anywhere to eat... and it rained.
|
Sandie Seward
|
Oh dear, you should have taken something to eat with you, then at least if it rained, you could have eaten it in the car.
Seriously, I didn't know that there were any Ospreys that far south, I thought they were all up in Scotland?
|
Ken R
|
I spent most of the holiday gardening I had a load of trees and bushes around my garden that I have been meaning to cut back for a couple of years now ! Well, I finally got a start on them....no where near finished, but hopefully, the sight of half trimmed green stuff will spur me on to finish it soon
All in all, a cheap way to spend the bank holiday, I usually end up going to a toy fair or two and spending an absolute fortune which I can't afford to
I'm looking forward to getting back to work for a rest

Hi Marieanne, now that the nice weather has arrived, I'm busy rearranging my back garden and removing some of the older plants and replacing some new ones. It's time consuming and I'm rather fatigued when I'm done outdoors. Don't feel much like going on the computer, when it's nice weather. We just don't get enough of it!
I do like to make a contribution to Silver Surfers and usually write a lengthy one when I do, but I just cannot fit everything into the day, just lately. Must be slowing down in my old age
When I make my next contribution to the site, you'll all need to spend an hour of your time to read it!

Tony is out doing our gardens as we speak, I think when I have to is soon enough. I'd much rather be on the computer. Yesterday I spent all day on my friends new laptop (it's a beauty) installing the printer and Norton and sorting out generally. Not that I am an expert I had to learn through trial and error but she is starting from scratch and I haven't forgotten how terrifying it was when I was just left to cope.
The only problem was the digital tv stick, it took ages to get it to agree to install and there was no signal no matter what I did. The firm were good though when I rang them this morning. Apparently I can use the main aerial to scan for channels and save them. It is so obvious isn't it and I didn't even think of it.

you will have to get the kids to look at the digital telly, we oldies are no use with technology

I have no children Vailron and my friend's three are too far away to be of any help. It is a lovely little stick tv that just goes into the side of the laptop, well it will be if we can get a picture from it. Our new mobile phone is the main problem for me it is horrendous.
I am watching the tennis at the moment. It is good that you have some decent weather. I am taking it that you are not working today.

That's not scorching!!!

Caroljoyce wrote,"Vailron, I am confused!

It is for Shetland, Caroljoyce. I believe their Summers are mostly quite cool, and for them to get 'high' temps is almost unheard of. Whilst we 'lucky' Southerners bask in temps of 80F or more, they are lucky to reach 60F.
I'm sure Vailron will back me up on this?

I expect that with temperatures in double figures for this time of year, the islanders must be worried that they have broken adrift and are heading for the equator
only joking Vailron, long may it last mate

The Land of the Wind
On the fine days, which can happen at any time of the year, the islands appear idyllic; in winter hurricanes they are awe-inspiring. This is the land of the oilskins and the parka, or 'Terre de Vent' (The Land of the Wind), as the French photographer Georges Dif recently described it in his beautiful portrait of the islands.
The climate is only slightly warmer than the Gulf of Alaska, which lies on the same 60th parallel of latitude. Although Shetland is as far north as Greenland's Cape Farewell, snow rarely lies long; gales of rain, squalls of sleet and occasional 'days between weathers' characterise the long winter, which lasts from October to April.
In midwinter there are less than six hours of daylight; at midsummer almost 19 (plus five and a bit hours of surreal twilight - the 'simmer dim'). Shetland summers are breezy, cool and often bright. Settled spells of weather are unusual at any season, although the spring is often the driest time.
There is twice as much annual rainfall as at Dunbar, but only about half as much as Fort William. Lying in the track of the Atlantic depressions and bathed by the relatively warm waters of the North Atlantic Drift, Shetland has surprisingly mild temperatures. February is the coldest month, with a daily average maximum of 4.9°C, and August the warmest, with 14°C. The average daily temperature range over the year is only 4.2°C. Shetland is popularly supposed to have 'nine months of winter and three months of bad weather'.
The weather is certainly boisterous, but rarely the same for two days running. Not surprisingly, the study of meteorology is an abiding passion with many islanders. The old weather lore is kept in daily use by fishermen and crofters.

well we are moving south in september, we have had enough of shetland, its fine in the summer, we are coming to that time of year now where it never gets dark, however come october through to march it never gets light. not a good place to be if you suffer from deoression, and if you dont when you first come up, you will develop SAD in the winter
|
Sandie Seward
|
I noticed the weather map on t.v. tonight, and whilst almost everyone else is basking in hot summer sun, you're island was covered in clouds.
I've been trying to do some housework today, but it's too hot, so I've left it for later. Still, I did manage to tidy up the bedroom a little. (I can actually see the carpet now, instead of bits of computer lying around all over the floor! ) My partner treats my flat like it's some kind of storage warehouse for computers and their accessories!

Still very warm and humid here this morning, with slighty more in the way of cloud cover than we've had for a while. It's still too hot for my poor little dog though. She finds it difficult to find somewhere cool to lie.
