Will you still need me, will you still feed me?????"Happy birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me............Many years ago, when I first heard that Beatles song, "When I'm Sixty-four" it did, indeed, seem like a lifetime away......in fact I even doubted if I would reach the ripe old age of Sixty-Four in those days.
I was a "Rocker" and lived "on the edge" a little. Fast cars, fast bikes, heavy music and smoking, boozing, and popping pills like if they were all going out of fashion.
"Sixty-Four?" I said to myself, "hell, it is just so far off.......the first decade of the Twenty-First Century, I won't be still alive then".
And, so it went on, and on, and on. Before I knew where I was, I had hit Twenty.......then Thirty.......still smoking drinking and pill-popping!!!!
Then, at the age of thirty-seven, I somehow developed Hepititas, and ended up in hospital. My liver had swollen, and I was, apparently, very ill.
"Is this it?" I thought, "is this Pay-Back time for all the wild excesses I have put my body through over the past couple of decades?"
The doctors insisted I was a Junkie and must have "shared a needle" with somebody.
"I don't use needles" I replied, angrily. Well it was the truth! I did not use needles, in all my drug-experiences not once had I injected myself, although I had plenty of offers to do so.
"Well, we don't know where you picked this up from", they replied. "Have you been near any babies or kiddies with Jaundice?"
"Yes", I said, relieved, "my Flatmate has a baby girl, and she hasn't been too well recently. "
We had cracked the mystery! I had picked up jaundice from my flatmates baby whom I often used to look after.
Sorted!
And so, life went on. Into my forties now. Getting towards "Middle-Age". I laid off the drugs quite a bit, also the booze.
I became almost "respectable".
My forties were spent on a Small-Holding in Wales, tending Chickens and Rabbits, dogs, and cats, ferrets and vegetables!
Back to the South-East of England for my fifties. Not drinking now, but still enjoying the odd spliff and trying to save towards my retirement.
I reached sixty, and could retire helped by the British "Pension Credit" system.
Four years on, I have been retired for four years.......gave up smoking earlier this year, and now, once again, I find myself suffering, health-wise!
But, I have reached SIXTY_FOUR!!!!!!!! Whoopie!!!!!!!!
