The Forecasters have got it perfectly right for once.  I have just peeked out of the window and it is snowing steadily, the ground is already covered with a fine white coating, just like icing sugar on a Christmas Cake.

I love to see snow, the only problem is that some people have to go to work in the morning, and this is forecast to last most of the night.

I need to get to the Post Office tomorrow, to pay my Rent and Council Tax, which, has to be "paid " by the 6th of the month.

I will be perfectly honest, I do not like going out walking on it, I am scared of perhaps falling and breaking a leg or some other part of me.

Slip or fall in your twenties or thirties, just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, carry on walking, and hope that nobody noticed.

Slip or fall in your forties or fifties, and it's more chance of an injury due to broken bones.

Slip or fall in your sixties or seventies, then you could easily be looking at a trip in a nice ambulance with blue flashing lights on your way to Accident and Emergency.

Yes, I like to see the snow, but I have taken precautions that Council Tax, or no Council Tax, I do NOT have to go out tomorrow.

I agree.  Unfortunately I have a busy day tomorrow.  Doctors first thing, then  Mammogram in the afternoon followed by work.  I have to drive down country roads to get to school so hope it doesnt get too bad, but suspect it will.  If need be I will cancel appointments, as like you I am petrified of falling over, especially as I already have one false knee.  I don't particularly want to harm that as I have been getting on so well with it, and I certainly don't want the other one done yet!!!!!!  Good luck everybody, and take care. B e safe. xx

Take care, Jan, and all our other members. Unless something is essential, it's always best to veer on the side of caution and not put yourself, or others, at risk, either as a driver or pedestrian.

Let us know about the conditions in your area if you get the time to post.

It started snowing here about 11a.m., but didn't settle. Now the sun is shining and there's no trace of snow. The wind has also calmed down, it was quite blustery over the last couple of days. I hope the snow stays away for a little while longer, as my son went off to work on his motor bike this morning!
Over the last few years, the snow seems to have affected Central and Southern England far more than Scotland! At least our gritters are out at the first sign of snow or ice.

Thanks Chris for your welcome update. Hope your son can make it back home before it all kicks off. Smile

Although it's unusual for most of us to experience so much snow as we have had today, it is not unknown.

This, from a book published about the Winter of 1963:

"The historic Januaries of the past 300 years in England were those of 1684,
1716, 1740, 1795, 1814, 1838, 1881, and 1940. We have more than one daily
record during the " Long Frost " of 1683-4, and from the primitive
instrumental readings then kept it appears that the three months
December-February put together make that winter the coldest of all, although
individual months in other winters may have been colder. "

As reported in the Manchester Guardian booklet "The Long Winter 1962-63"

Didn't get that much snow, but it was forecast heavy falls this afternoon, snow turned to sleet so looks like we have escaped the worst of it on the north Lincs coast Smile

( I checked before I went and it was ok??)  She closed the school at the end of the day, and the After School Club children's parents had been phoned.  I stayed and manned the phones and we left school at about 5pm!!  One parent had changed her phone and not told anybody!!!! The journey home was horrendous, even on the dual carriageways, especially when  others were speeding.  At the moment we have got what looks like fine rain, but could still be snow.  I'm not going out there to find out.  This morning it was lovely walking in the freshly fallen snow, but it is bound to freeze now.

We had a fine dusting of snow overnight Sunday but nothing to speak of really. The Monday morning, it started cold but fine until about 11 and then the snow really came down. It snowed pretty much all day until about 8 0 clock in the evening and stopped as suddenly as it started. About 11 o clock Monday night, the temperature went up a couple of degrees and a fine misty rain started, as of 12 o clock, it is still raining with no sign of any freeze at the moment. I guess we'll have to wait until morning to see what's what !

Good Luck all  Very Happy

We still have a lot of lying snow, although it actually stopped snowing around five 'o'clock this afternoon.

My biggest worry is that it will now freeze on top of it, and be extremely dangerous tomorrow morning.

I just hope that it won't "hang around" for too long!

It rained here during Monday night and by Tuesday morning, most of the snow had gone. It was sunny all day and what was left soon melted. tonight, we have a heavy frost but the roads aren't too bad as they were bone dry when the temperature fell.

Our private garden and courtyard still looks like a scene from "Scott of the Antarctic", virgin snow now turned to virgin ice as very few people have dared to venture out into it.

The big school near me has re-opened today after being closed for two days.

I managed to get to the bank and shops yesterday, without any mishaps, although there is still lots of ice around.

I have to go to the market today a little later on, and will give you an update when I get back.

Monday the 9th started out cold but fine and dry. About 10.30 am, it started to rain and continued, getting heavier and heavier until it got dark. This had the effect of washing away quite a bit of last weeks snow, but conversely, caused local roads to start flooding ! Aroud 8.30 pm, the rain turned to snow and boy ! what snow ! It is now just gone midnight Monday/Tuesday and it is blizzard conditions outside, there is no sign of any of the water left by the heavy rain, instead, we now have at least 3" of snow lying everywhere and still it comes down ! Visisbility is about 100 yards at best and there is a strong north easterly wind carrying the snow along, causing it to drift badly !

Sad bet i still have to go to work later though !  Sad

Good Grief, Ken, all we've got so far is rain, rain, and more rain. Although it's getting colder, and I think we could be in for some more snow a little later on.

The barometer needle has gone almost off the dial and all three of my barometers are pointing at "Stormy". Extremely low pressure, and getting much colder as the night wears on. What fun Winter can be.

Just pray you don't get any of this snow Sandie, it's far worse than the snow we had last week !!! The wind is the main problem, the snow isn't coming down vertically, it's almost horizontal  Shocked
