BAE said it would close sites in Guildford, Leeds and Telford, resulting in the loss of 330 jobs. It will cut a further 90 posts in Barrow due to slowing production of its M777 lightweight towed howitzer for the US military. An additional 50 jobs will be lost at its site in Newcastle, 7 jobs at Leicester and another 30 jobs will be lost through efficiency measures over the next 18 months.
The sites and jobs all affect BAEs Global Combat Systems division which employs about 1,820 people in its vehicles and weapons business which has already suffered 200 jobs cuts in November. BAE said it would move 100 roles to its sites at Leicester and Newcastle so the net loss is expected to be 400 jobs or almost 20 per cent of the business current workforce.
