A TECHNOPHOBE doctor blamed his ignorance of computers for his failure to keep proper patient and prescription records, a GMC hearing was told.

Dr Satya Das was suspended from Basildon PCT in 2006, after failing to improve standards at his two surgeries, in Falstones and Lower Street, Noak Bridge.

He failed a GMC performance assessment in February, 2007, when a panel ruled his professional performance was deficient.

At his latest hearing, the GP admitted he had failed the tests, but defended his abilities as a doctor with 45 years experience.

He said: "My only problem is computers.

"I didn't like computers.

"I was not computer literate and I was misled.

"I was told computers were coming, but not that it must all go on computer. You can do it manually as well."

In late 2005, Dr Das was given a list of things to improve at his surgeries, including adding all his patient and prescription records to the PCT's computer records system.

He was told to use the computer system for all prescribing, with full records of appointments.

However, when officials from the Essex Performance Advisory Group arrived in November to analyse his system, there was little to see, the hearing was told. The doctor was also ordered to make the crumbling consultation rooms "fit for purpose", and employ a nurse for four hours a week.

Dr Das said he had failed to do this because he could not find a nurse for such short a time.

He was also due to retire, and said he did not want to spend money creating a state-of-the-art surgery.

The doctor rebuffed criticism by the PCT of his infection control measures, as he only did minor work and not open surgery.

He said: "There was no incident of any infection in the 20 years I worked there.

"They came to say you haven't got this or that - your floor isn't clean.

"I was doing minor surgery. Why should my floor be like that?"

Dr Das, who is now retired, denies his fitness to practice was impaired.

The hearing continues.

Dr Das was my G.P. for fourteen of those years. I am sorry to hear that he is still under suspicion for mal-practice.

I used to consult with him at his Falstones surgery, and whilst it wasn't exactly "state of the art", it was always clean and tidy, and he was always a very pleasant and helpful Doctor.

I still miss him.

A DOCTOR has been struck off and branded a "serious risk" to patients because of poor levels of competency.

Dr Satya Das was suspended from Basildon PCT in 2006 after failing to improve standards at his two surgeries in Falstones and Lower Street, Noak Bridge.

Although he has now retired, he wanted to clear his name.

But yesterday, the GMC ruled that Dr Das, who has 45 years experience and has worked in Basildon since 1985, should be banned from the profession.

Panel chairman Dr Peter Jeffreys said Dr Das was "a serious risk to patients".

He said: "It is the panel's view, regrettably, that you do not understand the extent and nature of your deficiencies as a clinician."

In an assessment by the Essex Performance Advisory Group on behalf of Basildon PCT, Dr Das's scores were well below the benchmark for competent doctors.

He failed a GMC assessment in February 2007, with unacceptable performances in 11 out of 15 areas of medical practice.

The assessors consequently advised that Dr Das should stop treating patients.

Dr Jeffreys said Dr Das had a good career history for more than 40 years since qualifying as a doctor in 1963. He was a "caring and compassionate" doctor to his patients, and even provided a 24-hour call service.

But his failure to improve performance levels in 2006 showed he could no longer be trusted in the job, the panel ruled.

Dr Das defended his abilities at the hearing and said he had problems using computers.

Assessors from the peformace advisory group found his surgery computer records system had barely been used.

He also rebuffed criticism of his infection control measures because he said he only performed minor work and not open surgery.

He said: "There was no incident of any infection in the 20 years I worked there.

"If there had been incidents, my throat would have been cut before.

"Patients would have complained or died."

The poor standards at his surgeries led to the 2007 assessments and the GMC hearing.

What a shame, he has given years to looking after and listening to patients, giving the old care we used to get from Doctors,I remember when one Doctor used to use a ladies house to hold his surgery, and we sat in the front passage while he saw people in her front room, never mind Doctors surgerys they want to get down to the filthy Hospitals and have a go at them Evil or Very Mad

Yes, Jo-Jo, I fully agree with you regarding the state of our hospitals.

When Dr. Das got his computer, I remember remarking on it, and he told me then that he had not the faintest idea about how to use it. I even offered to help him, and construct a database for his patient's records, but he said that he couldn't allow me to do so, due to paitents confidentiallity.

Perhaps if he had let me help him, he wouldn't have been in so much trouble.

Mind you, I know which type of Doctor I prefer to consult with.
Not a "Computer Whizz-Kid", but a Doctor who sits and listens to you, and responds to you as a Human Being, not just looking up an online copy of Mimms, and prescribing you exactly what his computer tells him too.
